Why We Created USR?
United Somali Roots (USR) was founded by members of the Somali diaspora, a collective of youth who, as immigrants in Western countries, have often faced marginalization from their own greater Somali communities. This sense of exclusion extends to our roots in Somalia, where we belong to historically marginalized clans. Our shared experience of being “outsiders” has driven us to create an organization that not only supports but also empowers our communities.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, USR was established to give a voice to the marginalized Somali communities, and to show them that they have an organization they can be proud of—one that stands for justice, inclusion, and dignity. Whether at home in Somalia or abroad, we are committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of those who have long been oppressed and forgotten.
We Are A Strong Team
United Somali Roots (USR), our backbone is a formidable team predominantly composed of diaspora members who share an unwavering commitment to instigate positive changes within their community. Drawn together by a collective vision, our team is a dynamic force fueled by a shared passion for transformative impact. Leveraging the diversity of skills and experiences among us, we operate with a collaborative spirit, recognizing that our combined strength far surpasses individual efforts. As members of the marginalized Somali diaspora ourselves, we possess an in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by our community, motivating us to be catalysts for meaningful and sustainable change. United by purpose and resilience, our team stands as a testament to the strength that arises when individuals with a common goal unite for the betterment of the marginalized and aboriginal Somali community.
